the first bar and a half from G.F.Handel’s ‘the arrival of the Queen of Sheba’, piano duet version - forming an unresolving loop. Players choose whether to play the bass line or melody part. The conductor holds his breath and the loop is played, with accelerating tempo, until the conductor needs to draw breath.
I used to take the lower part in this piano duet in my father’s attempts to encourage my piano playing. Simple as it is I found it a struggle and he was always champing at the bit, rushing ahead with the florid, exciting higher part.
